The Dangerous Ambition of Science

Roman Krznaric and Adam Rutherford in conversation with Ella Saltmarshe

From the dark legacy of eugenics to the sharp edge of genetic engineering and AI, Roman Krznaric and Adam Rutherford trace the fine line between innovation and catastrophe.

When science meets ambition, things get messy. Philosopher Roman Krznaric (History for Tomorrow) and geneticist Adam Rutherford (Control) join us to pull back the curtain on humanity’s long obsession with control – over our biology, our technology, and even our future.

This isn’t a dusty history lesson – it’s a sharp look at how yesterday’s dangerous ideas still echo in today’s debates over designer babies, algorithmic power, and who gets to call the shots in an increasingly engineered world.

Moderated by Ella Saltmarshe, writer, systems thinker, and co-founder of The Long Time Project, this conversation will be equal parts candid and challenging. Roman and Adam will unpack how history’s missteps continue to shape our present—and why the choices we make now will define more than just the next chapter of progress.
