How the Global Economy Became a Weapon of War

Edward Fishman

The age of globalisation is over. In the 21st century, economic warfare is the key to global power. Former US state department official Edward Fishman shares his firsthand insights.

In recent decades, the world has witnessed the meteoric rise of economic warfare. Control over modern-day chokepoints – such as the US dollar, advanced microchip technology and critical energy supply chains – has become the key to geopolitical power in the twenty-first century. The result is an economic arms race among great powers and a fracturing global economy.

Edward Fishman knows firsthand how economic warfare is shaping the geopolitical struggles of our time. At the State Department, he was part of the Iran sanctions team, helped implement the Iran nuclear deal, and helped design and negotiate sanctions on Russia after its 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Drawing on extensive research, personal experience and interviews with key players, he joins How To Academy to take us backstage into the rooms of power, where we will meet the diplomats, lawyers and financial whizzes who’ve masterminded a fearsome new arsenal of economic weapons, harnessing the power of Wall Street, the City of London and Silicon Valley to confront rising authoritarian currents.

The sanctions against Russia might be the biggest coordinated act of economic warfare we’ve seen, but it won’t be the last. This unmissable talk will help you understand the forces that will shape our world for decades to come.
