David Byrne and Laurie Anderson

New York City: Art Now

Two icons of the New York art and music scene present an exclusive selection of the work they have produced during the past year in lockdown.

After more than forty years at the epicentre of the American avant-garde, David Byrne and Laurie Anderson are still producing works of extraordinary originality, beauty and power, moving effortlessly between the written and spoken word, music and visual art to inspire and delight audiences the world over.

Now they are coming together in a unique livestream event to share their work produced under lockdown in NYC.

David has co-created SOCIAL! – socially-distanced dance clubs: interactive, music-and-movement based experiences in which the audience is invited to dance under their own spotlights while listening to David’s instructional voiceover. He has also been making a series of thirty hand drawn illustrations for Pace Gallery; and released We Are Not Divided, a six week body of multimedia journalism that aims to bring people together through art and education, which is, in turn, part of his editorial project, ‘Reasons to be Cheerful’ which uses solutions journalism to bring more hope into the world.

Laurie has been working on a series of radio conversations with friends and colleagues. Laurie, who’d always dreamed of having a radio show in the middle of the night, took the opportunity in her first broadcast to address to racial inequality and George Floyd’s death. In May 2021 she will launch and perform ‘Party in the Bardo’ at the Park Avenue Armory, in collaboration with James Moran and other guests and accompanied by Lou Reed’s Drones.

In this livestream, David and Laurie will share their work, and also touch upon their past work and collaborations with the likes of Lou Reed and David Bowie… putting into context their substantial contribution to the contemporary music scene world-wide.

This livestream event is presented in partnership with the Borris Festival of Writing and Ideas.
