Nick Offerman Meets James Rebanks

The legendary actor and master craftsman meets bestselling author and farmer James Rebanks to explore their mutual passion for wild places and respect for the rhythms of nature.

As a boy, James Rebanks’s grandfather taught him to work the land the old way. Their family farm in the Lake District hills was part of an ancient landscape: a patchwork of crops and meadows, of pastures grazed with livestock and teeming hedgerows. And yet, by the time James inherited the farm, it was barely recognisable. The barns had crumbled; the skies had emptied of birds and their wind-blown song. James has dedicated his life to restoring the life that vanished from that ancient land. Guided by the past, he forges a legacy for the future.
Nick Offerman may be world-famous for his talents as an actor, from the unforgettable Ron Swanson in Parks and Rec to Karl Weathers in Fargo — and for his four New York Times bestselling books. But before he was an actor he was a carpenter – a practice he continues to this day, hand-building everything from furniture to ukuleles to canoes in his Los Angeles woodshop. He, like James Rebanks, knows the value of working with your hands, and of showing respect to the age-old rhythms of work, weather, nature and community.
This conversation will explore what it means to have love and pride in a place, and how, against all the odds, it may still be possible to build a new pastoral: not a utopia, but somewhere decent for us all.
This event takes place at 6:30pm BST.
This livestream is held in collaboration with 5×15.
