Thandie Newton Meets Gloria Steinem

For decades Gloria Steinem has helped women empower themselves. Now the legendary feminist meets Emmy and BAFTA winning actress and activist for an evening of wisdom and insight.

“I’m beginning to realise the pleasure of being a nothing-to-lose, take-no-sh*t older woman.” – Gloria Steinem

She is the most iconic American feminist of the 20th and 21st centuries: a journalist and activist whose career spanned the campaign trails of Bobby Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. As a co-founder of Ms. Magazine, Gloria Steinem demonstrated a unique gift for offering hope and inspiring action – and to this day her words continue to serve as a source of guidance, humour and unity for people around the world.

As the Emmy and BAFTA winning star of Westworld and The Line of Duty, alongside a cinematic slate as diverse as the Academy Award winning Crash and blockbuster Solo: a Star Wars Story, Thandie Newton is one of the most accomplished British actresses of her generation. As an activist and philanthropist, she has campaigned tirelessly to end violence against women and girls, and her TED talk exploring the role of selfhood and the bonds that connect us has been viewed over 3 million times.

In this exclusive conversation, Thandie will ask Gloria to reflect on her life and career at the forefront of the struggle for gender equality touching on themes from relationships to the patriarchy, travel to ageing, democracy to family.

Praise for Gloria Steinem:

‘When the path is dark, Gloria’s words light the way forward.’ – Natalie Portman

The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! is both timeless and timely, a gift of hope from Steinem to readers, and a book to share with friends. Gloria has a profound knack for expressing ideas in ways that stick with you.’ – Emma Watson

“This is a fearless book full of passion, resolute perspective, and unbiased hope for the future. Gloria brings honest poetry to readers while sharing her experienced wisdom on topics that demand our attention today. From personal challenges to political issues, The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! explores the power of words when it comes to being a changemaker for yourself and for the good of humanity. And if that’s not enough to move you, the beautiful illustrations will inspire you along the way.”- Janelle Monáe

“Democracy is the tree, families are the roots. GS. Trust Gloria Steinem to offer insights that liberate us into broader, more profound ways of thinking. Her mind is fertile, deep, conscious, and inspiring, with a humor that apparently can’t help bubbling up, so that we are laughing as we, hopefully, become more determined to change whatever we can change, and wise.”- Alice Walker

This event takes place at 6:30 BST.
