In the summer of 2015, travel writer Sophy Roberts met a young musician in Mongolia who was consumed with sadness at not having a piano to play. What began as an eccentric idea – to cross the border into Serbia and find one – quickly grew into an obsession. From Kamchatka to the Urals, from the Arctic to the Kuril Islands, her search ran across the frozen tundra of Russia’s wild east, uncovering memories and experiences, both musical and far more besides.
